About Populous: The Beginning
Populous: The Beginning is a god game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. Unlike the earlier games in the series, you do not play a distant deity. Instead you take the role of a Shaman, a powerful leader who walks among her tribe and wants to become a god herself. To reach that goal she has to travel through a whole solar system of 25 planets, defeat rival tribes and their own shamans, and master ever stronger magic. It is the story of a mortal climbing to godhood one world at a time.
This was the first Populous game to use true 3D graphics. Each planet is a small round world you can rotate and view from any angle, and the curved horizon makes every map feel like a real globe. Your followers build huts, train warriors, preachers and firewarriors, and gather the mana that fuels the Shaman's spells. You can give orders to single followers or to whole groups, which makes battles fast and personal. Building a strong village and keeping your people safe is the base of every victory.
The heart of the game is its magic. As the Shaman learns new spells she can strike enemies with lightning, swarms and tornadoes, swallow land in swamps, flatten hills or raise them, and even call up a volcano in the middle of an enemy base. Shaping the terrain lets you open new paths, protect your village or cut off your rivals. Mana grows with the size of your tribe, so managing your people and using spells at the right moment go hand in hand. Each planet adds new challenges and new magic.
The GOG version includes the Undiscovered Worlds expansion, which adds extra planets to conquer after the main campaign. It runs on Windows 10 with modest hardware, so this Bullfrog classic is easy to revisit today. The game is presented in English. Populous: The Beginning remains a unique mix of village building, real-time strategy and god-like terrain powers that later games still reference. Lead your tribe out of the dark, bend the land to your will and see if your Shaman can claim her place among the gods.
