About Heritage of Kings: The Settlers

The Settlers: Heritage of Kings is the fifth main game in the long-running Settlers series, developed by Blue Byte and first released in 2005. It mixes the series’ trademark city-building with a stronger focus on real-time strategy, heroes and story. You follow the young prince Dario, who sets out to unite a kingdom torn apart by war and to stand against the dark knight Kerberos and the forces that threaten the land. Along the way he gathers loyal companions, each with their own talents, and the campaign moves through green valleys, snowy mountain passes, marshlands and desert regions, every one presenting new challenges for your growing realm.

At the heart of the game lies the economy. You begin with a modest village and expand it by placing farms, residences, quarries, mines, sawmills and workshops. Settlers are no longer faceless workers: they need food, a place to live and time to rest, and when their needs are neglected they stop working or leave. Raw materials such as clay, stone, wood, iron and sulfur flow into refining buildings, and research in schools and universities unlocks better tools, stronger buildings and new military technology. Planning a smooth production chain and keeping workers happy is the key to a prosperous town.

Military conflict plays a larger role than in earlier Settlers titles. You recruit swordsmen, spearmen, archers, cavalry and later cannons, and lead them in formations under the command of heroes. Heroes such as Dario, Ari, Erec and Salim possess special abilities, from summoning allies to placing bombs or healing troops, and they often decide the outcome of a battle. A dynamic weather system adds another layer: in winter lakes and rivers freeze and open new paths for attack, while summer and rain change how quickly crops grow and how your units move across the land.

Besides the campaign, Heritage of Kings offers skirmish maps against computer opponents, where you set the starting conditions and test your strategies freely. The colorful, detailed 3D world with day and night cycles gives towns a lively look, and the orchestral soundtrack underlines the fairy-tale atmosphere. The GOG version is prepared for modern Windows systems, making it easy to revisit this classic. It is a great choice for fans of relaxed building who also enjoy commanding armies, and for anyone who remembers the series fondly or wants to discover one of its most distinctive entries.
