About Racine

Racine is an autobattler strategy roguelike developed by Dark Root Gardeners and published on GOG by Goblinz Publishing. You guide a lone hero on a journey through a world of spirits, using cards to increase your character's stats or cast powerful spells while the fighting itself plays out automatically. Along the way you find artifacts and new cards that let you develop your own play style. The hand-drawn art mixes misty forests, snowy mountains and shadowy foes, giving every run a calm but tense mood. Short runs, clear menus and readable card effects make it easy to learn, while the growing difficulty rewards careful planning.

Thanks to the praying cards in your hand, you can influence the outcome of each fight, but you have to do it swiftly. All of the action happens in real time, so enemies attack as soon as they can, whether you have played your cards or not. Each card costs energy and does something specific, such as healing your hero, raising armor, improving speed or adding critical chance. There is no need to rush into the melee, though, because the boosts you give your character carry on between fights. That means the choices you make early on shape every encounter that follows, and the intensity keeps rising as you travel deeper.

Managing your character is the heart of the strategy. Act fast but not too hastily, and think about which stats will be most useful to raise from the start, since life, armor, damage, speed, evade, critical hits, reflect and shield all matter. Deck building adds another layer: depending on your play style and the dangers to come, you choose which kinds of cards to take with you, and that choice determines what options you have when the time to fight comes. Cards such as Daikatana, Critics, Leech, Impulse and Heal reward different approaches, and events like the Charm of improvement let you grow stronger after each fight.

Exploration ties it all together. A node map lets you choose your path through various areas, where ancient shrines and sacred sites hide powerful new praying cards for your journey. As you wander, you start to uncover the secrets of this world and seek answers to the mystery of the sudden burst of violence shown by the spirits, slowly unveiling part of the truth about the roots of the land. The GOG version runs on Windows and supports English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. It is a fine pick for anyone who enjoys card strategy and roguelikes.
