About SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech
SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a card-based role-playing game developed by the Swedish studio Image & Form Games, the team behind the SteamWorld series, and published by Thunderful. It first launched in 2019 and arrived on PC on 31 May 2019. The story follows Armilly, an enthusiastic young robot who dreams of becoming a great hero, and her friend Copernica, an alchemist. When their village is attacked by a mysterious army, the pair set off on a journey that soon grows into a quest to save the whole kingdom.
Battles are turn-based and built around cards. Each hero brings a personal collection of punch-cards, and before every fight you choose eight cards per character to form your deck. Basic attacks generate steam pressure, which you then spend on powerful skills and spells. Playing three cards of the same hero in a row triggers a bonus chain, and certain combinations unlock special finishing moves. Since your hand is drawn at random, every round asks you to adapt, plan ahead and make the most of the cards you are dealt.
Your party grows to five heroes, including a fiery knight, a shy mage and other memorable companions, and you can bring three of them into battle at once. Every character has a unique style of play, so trying new line-ups is part of the fun. More than one hundred cards can be found, bought or crafted, and weapons and accessories change how they behave. Levelling up raises your stats, and difficulty settings let you tune the challenge from relaxed adventure to demanding strategy.
The world is lovingly hand-drawn, with lush forests, gloomy swamps, ancient libraries and haunted castles to explore. Between battles you search for hidden chests, solve small puzzles and meet a cast of quirky characters. The writing is full of gentle humour that mixes classic fantasy with steampunk robots, and the soundtrack fits each location perfectly. The campaign lasts around twenty hours, and optional challenges and a harder mode give experienced players plenty of reasons to return.
