About SteamWorld Dig 2

SteamWorld Dig 2 is a platform mining adventure developed and published by the Swedish studio Image & Form Games. Released on 22 September 2017 for Windows, macOS and Linux, it is the sequel to the original digging hit and expands its formula with a much larger world, more tools and a clear influence from classic Metroidvania games. You play as Dorothy, known as Dot, a resourceful steambot who heads to the dusty mining town of El Machino in search of her missing friend Rusty, the hero of the first game.

El Machino sits above a dangerous underworld, and strange earthquakes have been shaking the region. As Dot digs deeper, she finds that Rusty’s disappearance is tied to something much bigger hidden far below the surface. Along the way she meets Fen, a small and sarcastic glowing companion who helps her in combat and adds plenty of humour to the journey. The townsfolk of El Machino, from the shopkeepers to the local mechanic, react to your progress, and the story gradually reveals a threat that endangers the whole world above.

The heart of the game is digging. Every swing of the pickaxe carves your own path through dirt, rock and ore, so no two players dig the same tunnels. Gems and precious minerals can be carried back to town and sold, and the money pays for upgrades to your pickaxe, lamp, armour and storage. As you explore you unlock new abilities such as a hookshot for grappling, a jetpack for vertical movement, a pressure bomb for blasting hard rock and a powerful steam-driven drill. Collectible cogs let you customise each upgrade with extra perks, letting you tune Dot to your own play style.

Scattered across the underground are optional caves, each a compact puzzle or platforming challenge with secrets, hidden artefacts and rewards to discover. The world contains lava-filled caverns, ancient temples with laser traps, flooded mines and eerie vectron ruins, and the deeper layers bring tougher enemies and clever environmental hazards. The hand-drawn art and catchy western soundtrack give the adventure a warm, colourful personality, and the pacing rewards the satisfying loop of digging, collecting and upgrading. The game is rated 12 (PEGI 7, ESRB E10+).
