About Surviving Mars

Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city builder about colonising the Red Planet and surviving the process. It was developed by Haemimont Games together with Abstraction, published by Paradox Interactive and released on 15 March 2018 for Windows, macOS and Linux. Your task is to build the first functioning human colonies on Mars, armed with supplies, oxygen, decades of training and a can-do attitude, while keeping casualties as low as possible.

Every game starts with a choice of space agency, which provides resources and financial backing, followed by the choice of a landing site. From there you build domes and infrastructure, research new technologies and send drones out to gather materials and expand the settlement step by step. Colonists can grow their own food, mine minerals or unwind at the bar after a long shift, but the most important goal never changes: keep everyone breathing on a planet that was never meant for human life.

Planning matters far more than in a classic city builder. A poorly placed cable or an overloaded power grid means more than a traffic jam, because a blackout in a city without breathable air quickly becomes a matter of life and death. Each colonist is an individual with strengths, flaws and needs that affect the people around them, so a brilliant scientist can just as easily become a liability after one too many nights in the lab.

The retro-futuristic domes, inspired by the bright optimism of 1960s science fiction, house homes, factories and shops, and each one gradually develops its own neighbourhood personality. Inspired by the classic stories of Asimov and Clarke, the game hides handcrafted mysteries that may appear during a playthrough, from strange black cubes to a sphere outside the colony hub. Research mixes fixed and random breakthroughs, so no two journeys feel the same, and built-in modding tools let you create and share your own buildings, parks and mysteries. It is rated USK 6.

Key Features

  • Unique colonists – Every colonist has their own strengths and problems that shape the needs and behaviour of the people around them.
  • Retro-futuristic domes – Raise super structures for housing, factories and shops, each dome developing its own neighbourhood personality.
  • Mysteries to uncover – Each playthrough may bring one of several handcrafted mysteries that can lead to great fortune or terrible ruin.
  • Varied research – A mix of fixed and random research means new breakthroughs and a different experience on every journey.
  • Drones and infrastructure – Use drones to gather resources, build and maintain the colony as it spreads across the surface.
