About The Surge
The Surge is a hardcore science-fiction action role-playing game developed by Deck13 Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, first released in May 2017. It opens on what should be an ordinary day: you arrive for your first shift at CREO, the megacorporation that promises to save a world worn down by pollution and climate change. A catastrophic event knocks you out before the job has even begun. When you wake up, you are fitted with a heavy-grade exoskeleton and stranded in a destroyed section of the vast industrial complex, with no clear idea of what went wrong or who is still alive.
Everything around you now wants you dead. Industrial robots have gone haywire, former co-workers have been driven insane by their own augmentations, and a rogue artificial intelligence seems to be steering the chaos from behind the scenes. The CREO facility is a maze of production halls, research labs, scrapyards and maintenance tunnels, and exploring it carefully reveals shortcuts, hidden supplies and pieces of the story about what happened to the company. Progress is slow and tense, because every corridor can hide an ambush and every new area raises the stakes.
Combat is tight, visceral and built around melee weapons. You can target specific limbs on your foes, focusing your attacks on an unarmoured arm, a protected head or a heavily plated leg. Slicing off a targeted part is also how you collect loot: the next-gen loot system lets you take the weapons, armour pieces and schematics attached to the limbs you dismember. You then equip, upgrade and craft new gear from those parts, and make your exoskeleton stronger through a fresh take on levelling up. Huge bosses guard key areas of the complex and test everything you have learned.
