About The Whispering Valley

The Whispering Valley is a folk horror point and click game developed and published on GOG by Studio Chien d'Or. The story takes place in the Province of Quebec in 1896, where the village of Sainte-Monique-Des-Monts lies hidden in the hollow of a valley and conceals a secret that weighs heavily on the whole community. Much of the village has been abandoned, and those who remain can only wait. Something else torments the inhabitants as well: a shadow prowls around the houses. Some have seen it, others have heard it, and they say it whispers. The game delves into the horror of guilt and depression as you investigate the deepest secret of the valley.

Inspired by classics such as Scratches and The Dark Eye, the game brings back the traditional horror point and click subgenre with the old school adventure features many players love: puzzle solving, exploring, dialogues, an inventory and using and combining objects. The studio built a full-scale village that holds many mysteries, and its dynamic, highly detailed environments are yours to explore. Each door can be opened and each building can be entered, from quiet farmhouses with wide porches to dim bedrooms and cluttered workshops. The fog, the empty roads and an eerie soundtrack create a slow, heavy atmosphere that keeps you alert.

Exploration relies on 360° panoramic viewing combined with a zoom function, so you can examine every little detail that catches your eye. When a room is too dark to see, you hold up your lantern to light your surroundings and uncover the horrors hidden in the shadows. Since the game takes place in a realistic setting, its puzzles are realistic too, which does not make them easy to solve. Each solution comes from careful observation of the world around you, and clues found in one house often matter somewhere else in the valley.

The investigation is far from simple. The village has many characters, their relationships are complex and each of them holds a part of the secret. To find the truth you chat with every one of them, examine the environments and read their correspondence until the pieces fall into place. A simple, clean inventory interface lets you inspect, combine and use items with ease. The GOG version runs on Windows and supports English and French, with full audio in both. It is a strong pick for anyone who enjoys slow-burning folk horror, grounded puzzles and a gripping story about guilt.
