About Transistor

Transistor is a sci-fi action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games, the American studio behind Pyre and Hades. It was released on 20 May 2014 and quickly became known for its striking art direction, its unusual combat system and its memorable soundtrack. You play as Red, a famous singer in the futuristic city of Cloudbank, who has lost her voice after an attack by a mysterious group. She escapes with the Transistor, a strange talking sword that now holds the mind and voice of a man who tried to protect her.

Cloudbank is a beautiful, art deco inspired metropolis where citizens vote on everything from the weather to the colour of the sky. Now it is being taken over by the Process, a force of white robotic creatures that erase the city piece by piece. Together with the voice inside the sword, Red travels through plazas, bridges, apartments and the backstreets of the city to find out who is behind the attack and why. The story is told in a subtle, poetic way through dialogue, terminals and small details, and it leaves plenty of room for your own interpretation.

Combat blends real-time action with tactical planning. At any moment you can freeze time with Turn(), queue up a series of moves and attacks, and then watch Red carry them out at great speed, before she has to recover while enemies strike back. Each ability, called a Function, can be used as an active skill, as an upgrade to another Function or as a passive bonus, so the same set of powers can be combined in many different ways. Limiters let you raise the difficulty for extra rewards, and test chambers challenge you to master specific builds.

Every Function you unlock also reveals the story of a person from Cloudbank, which encourages you to try new combinations and slowly learn more about the world. A full playthrough takes around six to eight hours, and a Recursion mode lets you start again with all your abilities for a tougher second run. The hand-painted visuals, the moody electronic music by Darren Korb with vocals by Ashley Barrett, and the voice of Logan Cunningham give the game a unique atmosphere. Full controller support is included, and the mouse and keyboard controls are just as precise.
