About Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King
Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King is a collection of two celebrated 16-bit platformers, prepared by Digital Eclipse and published by Disney and Nighthawk Interactive, released for Windows PC on 29 October 2019. It gathers the original games based on two of the most popular Disney animated films and presents them with care, extra versions and modern features. The result is a faithful and polished way to revisit two titles that defined licensed platform games of the early nineties.
Aladdin follows the street rat from Agrabah on an adventure inspired by the film. Together with Abu, he races through the busy streets of the city, the dangerous Cave of Wonders and many other colourful locations, collecting gems along the way. His goal is to defeat the evil Jafar and rescue Princess Jasmine, using a sword, quick reflexes and a supply of apples to deal with guards, traps and strange creatures waiting at every turn.
The Lion King tells the story of Simba across ten levels that follow the events of the film. You begin as a young cub and grow into a powerful lion, facing hyenas in the elephant graveyard, escaping the famous wildebeest stampede and finally confronting Scar to reclaim the Pride Lands. Timon and Pumbaa appear along the way, and the varied stages mix platforming, careful timing and memorable set pieces drawn straight from the movie.
The collection includes multiple versions of both games from different consoles and handheld systems, so you can compare how each one played in its day. A highlight is the brand new Final Cut of Aladdin, an updated edition with refined gameplay and improved details. This makes the package interesting both for longtime players who remember the originals and for newcomers who want to discover them in their best available form.
Modern features make the classics far more approachable. A rewind function lets you go back a few moments after a mistake, saves allow you to stop at any point, and a game viewer lets you watch the games played from start to finish and jump in whenever you like. These options keep the challenge of the original design while removing much of the frustration that some tricky sections could cause back then.
Presentation is handled with real care. Both games run in 1080p with options for different aspect ratios and CRT filters that recreate the look of an old television. A museum section is packed with interviews, concept art and other production material that reveals how the games were made, and the original soundtracks can be played on their own, letting you enjoy the music from both films in its 16-bit form.
Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King runs on 64-bit Windows 7 or later with an Intel Core i3-530, 2 GB of RAM, a GeForce GT 630 with 1 GB and 3 GB of storage, so it suits almost any computer. Full controller support makes it feel just like the console originals, and the interface is available in six languages. For anyone who loves classic platformers or grew up with these films, it is a charming trip back to a golden era.
