About FAR: Lone Sails

FAR: Lone Sails is an atmospheric side-scrolling adventure developed and published by the Swiss studio Okomotive and first released in May 2018. You travel across a dried-out seabed littered with the remains of a decaying civilization, and your only companion is a unique vessel, a towering machine with a steam engine, a cabin and a large sail. Keeping that vessel going is the heart of the game. You must keep it running, overcome numerous obstacles and withstand hazardous weather conditions on a long journey towards the horizon. The game asks two simple questions: how far can you make it, and what will you find along the way?

The vehicle is both your means of transport and your home. Inside it, a small figure in a red coat runs between levers, buttons and gauges, feeding the furnace with fuel, pressing the throttle and fixing broken parts when something catches fire. On the outside, you hoist the sail when the wind is strong, then climb down to clear the way, move debris or operate old machinery that blocks the route. Over time you maintain and upgrade the vehicle so it can cope with new challenges, which turns every stretch of the journey into a small puzzle about energy, timing and careful handling of your machine.

The world tells its story without words. You explore a desolate dried-out seabed, follow the trails of your people and find relics and buildings that tell the story of a civilization on the run. Huge rusting shipwrecks rise from the sand, abandoned halls hide useful items, and quiet towns stand empty under a wide sky. The weather plays a big part as well: you watch clouds drift past, heed the wind that drives your sails and push through storms in which the sky darkens and burning debris falls around you. It is a post-apocalyptic world, yet free of zombies: just you and your machine against the big nothing.

FAR: Lone Sails is a fitting choice for players who enjoy calm, thoughtful adventures, striking visuals and stories told through atmosphere and music. The game runs on Windows and macOS and supports Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. Its campaign can be enjoyed in a few relaxed evenings, and its mix of vehicle management, light environmental puzzles and a moving soundtrack leaves a lasting impression long after the final stop. If you like quiet journeys through strange, beautiful landscapes, this vessel is waiting for its next driver.
