About Frontlines: Fuel of War
Frontlines: Fuel of War is an open world first person shooter developed by Kaos Studios and released in February 2008, now published by THQ Nordic. It is set on the frontlines of tomorrow, in a world ravaged by a global energy crisis, environmental decay and economic depression. Oil has become the most valuable resource on the planet, and two great power blocs are ready to go to war over what remains of it. You assume the role of an elite soldier in the Western Coalition Army, sent on an epic crusade against the Red Star Alliance to control the last of the world's oil reserves.
The game combines cinematic, non linear gameplay with near future firepower and what the developers call the Frontline Combat System. The battle line moves as you fight, so every engagement concentrates the action on a shifting front where the fiercest fighting takes place. Focused and intense combat pulls you towards key positions, and capturing them pushes the line forward. Mission objectives are not fixed to one route, so you can decide which target to attack first and how to approach it. Environments are destructible, which means walls, cover and structures can be chipped away during a long battle, and you keep making progress through the fight with no standard die and redo cycle.
Firepower is one of the main attractions. More than 60 next generation vehicles and weapons inspired by military designs of the near future are available, including jets, helicopters, tanks, armoured personnel carriers and more. Remote controlled drones add another layer, letting you scout or strike from a distance before soldiers move in. A customizable soldier system lets you represent your play style through character choices, weapon loadouts and role specialization, so one player can focus on heavy armour while another prefers support gadgets. Larger team battles support up to 64 players over LAN or the Internet, with shared targeting systems and squad voice chat.
Frontlines: Fuel of War is a gritty piece of late 2000s action that still offers large scale warfare with plenty of vehicles to command. The single player campaign follows the conflict across ruined cities, industrial zones and open battlefields, and each mission lets you combine infantry tactics with armour and air support. The game runs on Windows XP or Windows Vista (32/64-bit) and supports English, French, Italian and Spanish. The minimum setup calls for an Intel Pentium 2.8HT or AMD Athlon 2800+ processor, 768 MB of RAM (1 GB on Vista), an NVIDIA 6800GT or ATI X800XT, DirectX 9.0 and 12 GB of free disk space, so it runs comfortably on almost any current PC. A broadband connection is listed for hosting team battles. Cloud saves and Family Sharing are also supported.
