About Space Grunts

Space Grunts is a turn-based roguelike from Orangepixel, published on GOG by Orangepixel and THQ Nordic Mobile. Its big idea is a turn-based game on a planet outpost with no waiting between turns. You can play it at the speed of an arcade game, firing and dodging as quickly as your fingers allow, or slow right down and think carefully about each step. Either way, the tension stays high, because no matter how fast you take your turn, it might be your last. The bright pixel art, punchy sound and short, replayable missions make it easy to pick up for a quick session or a long evening.

The story is set in the year 2476, when the space federation of Earth has been building moon bases across the galaxy. One of those bases has started sending a distress signal, and the Space Grunts, a group of intergalactic problem solvers, are sent to investigate. Before each mission you pick your type of grunt: Leader, Enforcer or Tech junky. That choice has an impact on the items, weapons and environment you meet along the way. Your task is to find a way into the moon base, figure out what has happened, push through to the lower levels and finally reach the core of the problem.

Standing in your way is a mix of aliens, robots, security drones and hostile base systems, and each level is laid out on a grid where position and timing decide every fight. A large collection of consumables is scattered across the base, from weapon enhancers and destructive toys to armor, explosives and system hacks, and using them wisely is the key to advancing deeper. The inventory screen shows finds such as the Shot Doubler, Tele Beacon, Triple Shot, Invisibility, Regeneration, Mobile EMP and Cool Boots. You begin with three standard grunt weapons that can be enhanced for more firepower and range, and you will also find alternate weapons and melee weapons.

There are various ways to complete the game, and secrets wait around every corner. Anomalies lead to weird places, underground routes open shortcuts, and mysterious items can transport you to other areas of the moon base, while secret rooms and hidden areas are tucked all over the levels. Each attempt shakes up the layout, so runs feel fresh and encourage you to try another grunt type or a new set of tools. The GOG version runs on Windows, is available in English and has light requirements that suit older laptops. It is a great pick for anyone who enjoys roguelikes, sci-fi action and quick tactical decisions.
