About Stronghold Crusader HD
Stronghold Crusader HD is a real-time strategy and castle-building game developed and published by the British studio Firefly Studios. The original Crusader came out in 2002, and this high-definition version followed in 2013. The game takes you to the Middle East during the Crusades, where you can play as European lords such as Richard the Lionheart or as the forces of Saladin. Historical campaigns cover the First, Second and Third Crusades as well as conflicts inside the Crusader states, with famous battles such as Nicaea, the siege of Antioch, Krak des Chevaliers and Jerusalem.
Every victory starts with a well-run castle. You place walls, towers, gatehouses and moats, and behind them you build a working economy of farms, woodcutters, quarries, iron mines and workshops. Food, weapons and taxes must be balanced carefully to keep your people happy, because a hungry or overtaxed population will leave. In the desert, fertile land is rare and close to oases, so choosing where to build is a key decision. A strong economy lets you train archers, spearmen, knights, Arabian swordsmen, horse archers and many other units.
Combat revolves around attacking and defending fortresses. You can storm walls with ladders and siege towers, dig tunnels under towers, fire catapults and trebuchets, or set the enemy’s buildings ablaze. Defenders use boiling oil, pitch ditches, killing pits and mighty walls to hold back huge armies. The high-definition battlefield view lets you zoom out and see the whole map, which helps when flanking an enemy or luring troops into a trap. More than one hundred skirmish missions on the Crusader Trail pit you against computer lords with their own personalities and tactics.
Crusader Extreme is included as well. It plays like the original game but raises the unit limit from 1,000 to 10,000 soldiers, adds tactical powers such as arrow volleys and reinforcements, and comes with new buildings and a dedicated Extreme trail. A map editor lets you design your own scenarios, and multiplayer supports up to eight players online or over a local network. With its depth, distinctive castle building and charismatic AI opponents, it is still one of the most popular medieval strategy games for PC.
