About The Hungry Fly

The Hungry Fly is a single-player narrative adventure about a fly. A hungry fly, with razor-sharp teeth and a taste for dead things. It was developed by Erupting Avocado, published by indie.io and released for Windows on 23 October 2024. Told like a dark fairy tale, it follows the fly as it wakes, weak and weary, in a dreary swampland and sets out to find a morsel, a corpse, anything that will stop its starvation. The problem is that in this swamp nothing ever dies.

Where death should be, the fly finds only tormented life. The swamp is home to strange creatures, each one sadder and more tortured than the last, and every meeting pulls the tale further into the surreal. You fly low through yellow grass and murky water, slip into burrows lit by candles and look for anything that might finally be edible. The mood is grim and storybook-like at the same time, which is exactly what makes it unsettling.

Your goal eventually becomes clear: a monster lives in a bath in a house far away, and the fly means to devour it. Getting there means dealing with the grotesque inhabitants along the way. They will ask you to do surreal and horrible things, and if you do them you get to eat horrific things that sate the fly’s hunger for dead flesh. Every choice matters, no matter how strange it looks in the moment.

The story is built to be told more than once. When one telling ends, you can restart the tale and pick a different path through it, eating your way towards one of three different endings. Because the adventure is compact, seeing how other decisions change the outcome is part of the experience, never a chore, and each path reveals a little more of the swamp and its unhappy residents.

At its core this is a disturbing tale of existential horror told through the eyes of the lowest creature imaginable. You explore, you meet depressing caterpillars and you decide what the fly is willing to do to survive. The game is rated USK 18 in Germany, so it is meant for adult players only.
