About The Spirit of the Samurai
The Spirit of the Samurai is a 2D action adventure with Metroidvania elements, developed and published by Digital Mind Games and released in December 2024. You assume the role of Takeshi, a Japanese samurai who must protect his village from the onslaught of an Oni attempting to conquer the land with his undead army. The game presents its story as a unique, brutal stop-motion cinematic adventure, with every character and creature animated in a highly detailed style inspired by the classic films of Ray Harryhausen.
You defend the Forbidden Village across a meticulously crafted world alive with Japanese mythology and folklore. You wander through ruined villages, mountain caves, desolate cemeteries and more, battling yokai, undead monsters and demons, including tengu and the horrifying Jorogumo spider woman. The atmospheric levels are full of secrets to discover, and paths that seem closed often open up later as your abilities grow, encouraging you to return and search every corner of the map.
Three spirits are bound by fate. You fight through the undead hordes as three distinct characters: Takeshi, a skilled samurai; Kodama, a brave but tiny forest spirit; and Chisai, a warrior cat. Each one interacts with the world in a different way, from intense sword combat to precise platforming and exploration. Takeshi confronts legions of demons armed with the weapons of ancient Japan, namely the iconic katana, the versatile yari spear and the formidable bow, and every hero has devastating special power attacks and combos.
Every step taken and foe vanquished grants experience, which you spend to enhance abilities, hone stats and master an array of moves. A built-in combo editor lets you link those moves into custom chains, while dynamic enemy AI keeps each encounter challenging. Controls are fast, smooth and varied, ranging from combo-based fighting to linked magical powers. The game runs on Windows and supports English with full audio plus French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Korean and Chinese.
