About The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person mystery adventure from The Astronauts, the studio founded by developers behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm. You play as Paul Prospero, an occult detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter and travels to Red Creek Valley to find the boy. On arrival he realizes that Ethan has disappeared in the wake of a brutal murder, and that something terrible has happened to the people of the valley. The story focuses entirely on exploration and discovery, and it does not hold your hand: you have to look closely, piece together what you see and draw your own conclusions.

Paul Prospero has a supernatural gift that lets him communicate with the dead and witness their final moments. At each crime scene you search the surroundings for clues, restore the scene to its original state and then arrange the visions of the past into the right order to reveal what really happened. Each case fills in another part of the story of the Carter family and the dark force that took hold of the valley. There is no combat at all, so the experience is shaped by atmosphere, observation and the slow revelation of a tragic mystery, with some disturbing scenes that match its mature rating.

Red Creek Valley is an open area of forests, a dam, an abandoned mine, a railway line, a church and a cemetery, and the story is non-linear, so you can explore many places in the order you choose. The world was built with photogrammetry, a technique that turns real-world photographs into 3D models, which gives the scenery an unusually realistic look. The writing is inspired by the weird fiction of Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski and H. P. Lovecraft, blending the feel of a detective story with an eerie, dreamlike tone.

The GOG version of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is developed and published by The Astronauts and runs on Windows. It is available in seven languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Czech. The game is a compact, self-contained story that you can finish in a few evenings, and it suits players who enjoy narrative exploration, environmental detective work and haunting atmosphere. If you are looking for a beautifully crafted mystery with a strong sense of place, this is a memorable journey through a valley full of secrets.
