The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery developed and published by The Astronauts and released on 25 September 2014. It focuses entirely on exploration and discovery, and the purchase includes two games: the original release and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux, a remaster built in Unreal Engine 4.
You play as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realising the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Red Creek Valley and finds things even worse than he imagined, as Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder that might be only one of several local deaths.
Using Paul’s supernatural ability to communicate with the dead and your own powers of observation, you see how victims died and gather clues about a trail of corpses, a dark ancient force and the fate of a missing boy. The non-linear tale blends pulp, private eye and horror fiction inspired by Chandler, Blackwood, Grabiński and Lovecraft.
It is a single-player narrative adventure for Windows with full controller support.
