About Arise: A Simple Story

Arise: A Simple Story is an emotional adventure developed by Piccolo Studio and published by Untold Tales, released on 3 December 2020. It is about losing the love of your life. You play as an old man whose journey begins at the end, and from there you push forward into the bittersweet recollections of a past life. Each chapter is built around one memory, so the path through the game follows the path of a whole life, from childhood to old age.

This is a story about happiness and hardship, joy and sorrow, a story that all of us will one day experience. There is no spoken dialogue or written text guiding you through it. Instead, the music, the colours of each world and the way the old man moves carry the meaning, letting every scene speak for itself. Bright meadows sit beside harsh storms and quiet moments of grief, mirroring the ups and downs of a long shared life.

The central mechanic is the ability to manipulate time. With a simple input you move time forward and backward inside each memory, which changes the world around you: sunflowers turn to face the light, ice melts, rivers rise and fall, and new routes appear. You combine this with climbing, swinging and jumping to solve puzzles and reshape your surroundings. Levels range from snowy mountain ledges and golden autumn birch woods to dark pine forests and glowing dreamlike spaces.

You can play alone or share the screen with a second player, with one person guiding the old man and the other controlling time, and Remote Play Together is supported too. The game was designed with a controller in mind and offers full controller support, cloud saves, achievements and trading cards. English is available with full audio, along with a wide range of interface languages including Polish. Arise: A Simple Story is rated USK 12.
