About CARRION
CARRION is a reverse horror game from Phobia Game Studio, published by Devolver Digital in 2020. In most horror games you run from the monster, but here you are the monster: an amorphous red creature of unknown origin, held captive in a secret research facility. When it breaks free, the hunt begins. You stalk and consume those that imprisoned you, spreading fear and panic among the scientists and guards as you slither through vents, labs and caves. The facility that once held you becomes your hunting ground, and every room offers a new chance for retribution.
The creature moves with long, grasping tentacles that can grab, pull, smash and throw, which gives the game a fluid, physical feel. As you feed, you grow and evolve, and you acquire more and more devastating abilities on the path to retribution. Size is power, but a bigger body is also harder to hide, so you need to read each situation and decide whether to sneak, ambush or charge straight in. Armed guards, flamethrowers and other defences fight back, which means even a monster has to be clever about when and where it strikes.
The world is built like a metroidvania: a large, interconnected facility of industrial halls, overgrown labs and dark caverns that opens up as you gain new powers. Many paths are blocked at first, and physics puzzles ask you to use your tentacles and abilities to flip switches, open doors and break through barriers. The pixel art is detailed and atmospheric, with dramatic lighting, flickering machines and bursts of fire. The game is violent and gory, which fits its mature rating, and its dark, Lovecraftian mood makes the breakout feel both grim and exciting.
