Fantasy General is a classic turn-based strategy game from Strategic Simulations and the third instalment in the Five Star General series. The story is set in the world of Aer, which for over a century was a place of peace, joy and prosperity. Through advances in technology and magic its people built a harmonious society, until the Shadowlord came. Once a mere man with a thirst for knowledge and power, he forsook his humanity, summoned creatures of evil, gathered the most despicable of men and conquered Aer. Now the Council of Five, a leadership of the wisest rulers and mages of the land, has chosen a powerful general to unite the people and challenge his reign. That general is you, and the campaign follows your march to restore peace.

Battles play out on hex maps across five continents and a wide range of terrain, where every move and attack is planned turn by turn. Before the war begins you choose your general from four champions, each with unique traits and abilities, and the setup screens let you shape the army you start with. Over 10 unit classes can be recruited from four races, from heavy and light infantry to archers, cavalry, sky hunters, siege engines and spell casters. Research upgrades strengthen your forces over time, and hidden items and heroes can be uncovered on the map to lead your troops and boost their power against the lieutenants of the Shadowlord.

The presentation is a faithful piece of mid-nineties strategy design, with painted battlefields, detailed unit art, parchment story pages and an atmospheric choral soundtrack. Campaign and Scenarios modes give you a long war to fight or shorter battles to plan, and the interface makes it easy to read the board and issue orders. The GOG version runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and is available in English, French and German, with modest system requirements that suit almost any computer.
