About Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000

Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000 is a tactical turn-based strategy game developed by Holistic Design and originally released in 1997, and it was the first computer game set in the Warhammer Epic 40,000 universe by Games Workshop. The game chronicles a monumental struggle for survival in the distant future. Humanity’s spread throughout the stars has not gone unnoticed, and along the way enemies have surfaced. The planet Volistad has been invaded by Orks who plan to crush the last of the humans and claim the world as their own, and it falls to you to lead the Imperial forces that will drive them back.

Two armies meet on the battlefields of the 41st millennium: the Imperium of Man and the Space Ork Horde. The scale is epic in every sense. From standard infantry to the mighty Imperial legions of tanks, and from the roaring Ork warbikes to the towering Titans and Gargants, the future has never been so brutal. SSI, the studio known for the Five Star General series, brought its experience to this first video game adaptation of the Epic tabletop game, and you can feel that pedigree in the careful pacing of each turn and the weight of every unit you move across the map.

The campaign is non-linear and unfolds on a strategic map of Volistad, spanning more than 30 scenarios across multiple battlefronts. You command a vast and fully customisable army, choosing which forces to field and how to grow them as the war goes on, which gives you far greater selection and control than a fixed roster would. With over 85 unit types to select and control, a comprehensive encyclopedia covers the forces of the Warhammer Epic 40,000 universe, so you can study the strengths of Space Marines, Imperial Guard regiments, armoured transports and war machines before you commit them to battle.

Between the battles, more than ten minutes of live-action FMV cutscenes set the mood, with Commissar Holt serving as your advisor, and these atmospheric scenes are a big part of why the game earned its cult status. The cutscenes, the gothic architecture of the cities and the grim tone all capture the feel of the setting. The GOG version runs on Windows and is in English. If you want an old-school wargame that turns the grim darkness of the far future into thoughtful turn-based battles, the liberation of Volistad is ready for its commander.
