About Mainframe Defenders
Mainframe Defenders is a retro-futuristic tactical strategy game from Synthetic Domain, a small team of hobbyists with a passion for making games. A computer virus has infiltrated the Stargazer research complex, and most of its robotic units are now controlled by the virus. You lead a squad of four prototypes on a mission to defend the complex mainframe. On your way to the deepest parts of the complex you will have to repel assaults, destroy unit fabricators, download valuable data and clear infected nodes, while the enemy squad keeps trying to break your defences.
The heart of the game is building your squad. Similar to how you build a deck in card games, in Mainframe Defenders you combine different items with unique abilities to create an unstoppable team. Every item has limits and drawbacks, and you can work around them or double down on them, creating a flawed yet powerful build. You can cook enemy robots to death with heat, melt them with corrosion, absorb damage and return fire, bury them under bullets or eliminate them with a single powerful shot, and debuffs can render opponents useless. Each enemy unit has its own role and is designed to counter certain strategies, so relying on one plan too much is risky.
Levels combine hand-made rooms with procedural generation to create random maps, and missions have differing objectives combined with unique mission conditions. You can accept a hard challenge or avoid the unknown and risk falling behind. Victory or defeat, the game is not over: the progression system lets you spend research points to unlock new units, each with its own set of upgrades and load-outs, and new items that support fresh strategies. Upgrade trees, such as the three levels of the Oppressor unit, let you shape each prototype with critical chances, extra shots and status effects.
The look is inspired by 80s terminal PCs, with green text, grid maps and a hybrid synthwave soundtrack. The GOG version of Mainframe Defenders is developed and published by Synthetic Domain, runs on Windows and Linux and is available in thirteen languages, including English, German, Polish, Japanese and Korean. It takes only about 200 MB of space and works on modest hardware. It suits players who enjoy careful turn-based planning, experimenting with item combinations and replaying missions to unlock more options. If you like compact tactics with deep build choices, it is a sharp and rewarding pick.
