About Massive Chalice
Massive Chalice is a turn-based tactical strategy game developed by Double Fine Productions, released on 1 June 2015 and later co-published with Xbox Game Studios. You play the Immortal Ruler of a nation facing the Cadence, a mysterious enemy whose invasion will last for three hundred years. At your side is the Massive Chalice itself, a talking relic voiced as two bickering personalities, which needs those three centuries to build up enough power to end the threat. Your task is to keep the realm alive until then, one generation after another.
The heart of the game is its Bloodline system. Heroes belong to noble houses, and you decide which of them are joined in dynastic unions to produce the next generation of defenders. Every hero carries a randomised genetic code, so children can inherit the best or worst gameplay traits of their parents, from strength and agility to quirks such as clumsiness or a short temper. Building strong families matters, because the heroes age over the course of the timeline and eventually pass away, forcing you to plan decades ahead and always fight with an imperfect roster.
Battles play out on compact, hand-crafted maps in a classic turn-based format. Your squad mixes three core classes, the armoured Caberjack, the ranged Hunter and the explosive Alchemist, plus hybrid classes created when heroes of different houses have children together. The Cadence fields strange enemies that drain experience, age your heroes or split apart when struck, so every encounter asks for careful positioning. When a hero fights valiantly enough before dying, their weapon can become a Bloodline Relic that grows stronger as it is passed to descendants of the same house.
Between missions you manage the kingdom on a long strategic timeline. You build keeps and other structures, research technologies, appoint regents and react to random events that can strengthen or weaken your houses. Because each decision plays out over years, the 3-year-old child you train today may become your most reliable melee fighter later in the war. The game supports full controller play, achievements, trading cards and cloud saves, and every campaign follows a different course thanks to its random elements.
