About The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human
The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is a side-scrolling underwater action-adventure developed and published by the Swedish independent studio YCJY Games. It was released on 19 January 2016. In the distant future, rising seas and a frozen surface forced people to live beneath the waves. A spaceship called Argo9 was sent through a wormhole to look for a new home, and now, thousands of years later, it returns to an Earth where humans have vanished. As its lone pilot you dive into the depths to find out what happened to our species.
You control a small submarine and explore a large, connected map at your own pace. Coral reefs, flooded cities, rusting machines and dark trenches hide clues to the fate of humanity, and the story is told almost entirely through art, backgrounds and short notes. New areas open up as you find upgrades such as a harpoon, a saw, torpedoes and stronger thrusters, so returning to earlier places often reveals passages you could not reach before. The calm, melancholic atmosphere invites you to slow down and take in the scenery.
That calm is broken by dramatic encounters with gigantic sea creatures. Each boss, such as The Chain Gang, The Tranquil or The False Light, has its own patterns and arena, and defeating it takes good reflexes, careful movement and smart use of your weapons. Your hull can take only a limited amount of damage, and you have to manage your movement under water, which gives the fights a heavy, tense feel. Some battles are optional, so you can decide how much of the ocean you want to challenge.
The pixel art is detailed and atmospheric, with layers of light and shadow that make the sea feel deep and mysterious, and a moody electronic soundtrack follows every dive. A first playthrough takes around five to six hours, and hidden areas, extra bosses and multiple outcomes reward thorough exploration. Full controller support makes it comfortable to play on the couch, and the modest system requirements mean it runs well on older laptops too. It is a compact, thoughtful adventure about nature, loss and the traces we leave behind.
