About Uplink

Uplink is a hacking simulator from Introversion Software, the British studio that later made several acclaimed strategy games. First released in 2001 and re-released digitally in 2006, it has become a cult classic thanks to its tense atmosphere and its convincing fantasy of being a professional hacker. It holds a Metacritic score of 75 on PC.

You play an Uplink Agent who makes a living performing jobs for major corporations. Contracts arrive through the Uplink bulletin board, and they range from hacking into rival computer systems and stealing research data to sabotaging other companies, erasing evidence or altering records. Each completed job earns money and raises your rating, unlocking more dangerous and better paid missions.

The whole game takes place on your own computer desktop. You bounce connections across servers on a world map so that the trace takes longer, crack passwords, bypass firewalls and proxies, then delete the logs before anyone notices. If a trace completes or a slip is discovered, the authorities may come for you, so every intrusion becomes a race against the clock that rewards careful preparation.

Your earnings buy better gateways, faster processors and new software tools. You can speculate on a fully working stock market and even influence its outcome, modify academic or criminal records, or divert bank transfers into your own accounts. Over time a story emerges about a mysterious virus and a conflict that could affect the entire network. It is rated 12 for criminal acts.
