About War for the Overworld
War for the Overworld is a dungeon management strategy game developed by the independent British studio Brightrock Games and released in 2015. It turns the usual fantasy story upside down: you are not the brave hero raiding dungeons for gold, but the Underlord who builds them. The game was made by fans of the classic dungeon keeping genre and stays close to its original spirit, with a modern engine, sharp humor and plenty of fresh ideas. Your mentor is voiced by Richard Ridings, the famous voice of evil from the genre's golden era, which adds a lot of charm to every mission.
Building is the core of the game. You order your workers to dig tunnels through rock, claim territory and turn raw space into rooms such as lairs, hatcheries, libraries, workshops and training grounds. Each room attracts and supports different minions, from loyal goblins and armored chieftains to spellcasters and strange creatures from the depths. Minions have needs and moods, so you must keep them fed, paid and busy. Over sixty rooms, spells, potions, rituals, defenses and constructs are unlocked as you progress, giving you many ways to shape your underground realm.
Defense and offense go hand in hand. Heroes from the overworld will try to invade, so you set up doors, traps and choke points, then send your forces to strike back at the right moment. You can also cast spells directly on the battlefield or possess a single minion to fight in person. Battles are tactical, and a well-planned layout can win a fight before it begins. The campaign tells a darkly funny story across many varied levels, each with new goals and rivals, while survival mode challenges you to hold out against endless waves.
Six game modes give lasting variety: campaign, skirmish, scenarios, multiplayer, survival and the My Pet Dungeon experience, with a free two-level demo included. Online multiplayer lets you test your dungeon against other players. A powerful map editor with scripting support, plus dozens of mutators that change the rules, lets you create your own challenges. Violence is fantasy in style, with a cartoonish tone. The GOG version runs on Windows.
