About Banished

Banished is a city-building strategy game developed and published by Shining Rock Software and released on 18 February 2014. You take control of a group of exiled travellers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They arrive with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland, and everything else has to be built by hand. There are no quests and no story missions to guide you, only an empty valley, a handful of families and the long task of turning raw wilderness into a lasting community.

The townspeople themselves are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own and eventually die, so every decision affects real generations. Keeping them healthy, happy and well fed is essential to making your town grow, and building new homes is never enough on its own: there must be enough people to move in and start families. Cold winters, poor harvests and sickness can quickly put a young town at risk, which makes careful planning of food, firewood, clothing and warm shelter the heart of the experience.

Banished has no skill trees, so any structure can be built at any time, provided your people have collected the resources to do so. There is no money either. Your hard-earned goods are bartered away when trade vessels arrive, and these merchants are the key to adding livestock and annual crops to the townspeople’s diet. Their long trade route, however, comes with the risk of bringing illness from abroad. There are twenty different occupations, from farming, hunting and blacksmithing to fishing, mining, teaching and healing, and you decide how many people work in each.

No single strategy will succeed for every town, because some resources may be scarce from one map to the next. You can replant forests, mine for iron and quarry for rock, but each of these choices requires setting aside space into which the town cannot expand. Success or failure depends on the careful management of risks and resources. The game runs on Windows and is available in English. It is a strong choice for fans of calm yet demanding city builders, survival strategy and resource management, and for anyone who enjoys watching a small camp grow into a thriving town.
