About Bartlow's Dread Machine
Bartlow's Dread Machine is an action game developed by Beep Games, Inc. with Tribetoy and published by Beep Games, Inc. in September 2020. It presents itself as an artifact from the past: a long-forgotten game from the dawn of the Electric Age, rebuilt as a dual stick arcade shooter. The look recalls a mechanical cabinet, with wooden figures gliding along tracks through miniature sets of streets, parks, halls and caves that seem to be driven by gears behind the scenes.
The story starts with a shock. Teddy Roosevelt has been kidnapped, and your mission is to pursue his abductors from New York, across the Great Plains to San Francisco, the high seas and beyond. Along the way you travel by train, by ship and even in a newfangled automobile. Each stop is a new themed world, and six scintillating game worlds in total give the chase plenty of variety, from busy city blocks to dark caverns full of danger.
The combat is pure arcade. One stick moves your hero while the other aims, and you master an arsenal of futuristic Edwardian weapons as you fight otherworldly creatures to free the Commander in Chief. A cast of improbable monsters and historical characters fills every level, so each fight feels a little absurd and a lot of fun. Quick dodges and smart weapon choices keep you alive as waves of strange foes close in from every side.
You can play alone, or share the screen with a friend in local couch play on one PC, with Remote Play Together for friends far away. It offers 19 achievements, full controller support and cloud saves. It runs on Windows 7 or newer and supports English with full audio, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese. The minimum setup needs an Intel i5-5200U at 2.2 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 660 with DirectX 10 and 5 GB of storage, so it suits most modern gaming PCs. The game contains mild fantasy violence and is suitable for players aged 12 and over who enjoy old-fashioned arcade action.
