About Crusade in Europe

Crusade in Europe is a classic real-time simulation game from the 80s, designed by Sid Meier and Ed Bever and developed by MicroProse. It was the first title in the Command Series of tactical wargames from the studio, and it puts you in charge of the European Campaign of 1944. Normandy, June 1944: an invasion force of more than 150,000 British, Canadian and American troops needs to be managed, and then their actions on the ground need to be coordinated in response to real-time events on the battlefield. This is the beginning of a true military crusade, and every decision rests on your shoulders.

The game features real-time battles that test your skills as a commander. Time runs at an accelerated pace, so hours of campaigning pass in minutes, and reports from your divisions arrive as the situation develops: units announce that they are attacking, that losses are heavy or that they have made contact with enemy forces. Each message is stamped with the date, the time and the weather, from clear summer mornings to thick winter fog. You have to read this flow of information, judge where the front is weakest and respond before the enemy exploits a gap in your lines.

Five different scenarios, from D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge, recreate the tactical decisions faced by commanders in the European Campaign. Each scenario has multiple variables, so you can create what-if situations and explore how events might have turned out, and different difficulty levels let both newcomers and veterans find the right challenge. You can choose to lead either side, and in-depth historical backgrounds and hints explain the context of each operation. The idea for the Command Series came from observing actual tabletop military scenario exercises, and that heritage shows in the clean map and unit markers.

The challenge is to manage your assets, place and move them around the battlefield map and outmanoeuvre the enemy. Victory requires careful strategic thinking and fast responses to rapidly changing battlefield conditions. Sid Meier, one of the best-known and most prolific strategy designers, worked with historian Ed Bever to make the game as historically accurate as possible. The GOG version, published by Atari, runs on Windows through DOSBox and is in English. If you want to see where Sid Meier’s strategy career took shape, this wargame of 1944 is a fascinating piece of history to command.
