About RIOT: Civil Unrest
RIOT: Civil Unrest is a real-time riot simulator developed by Leonard Menchiari together with IV Productions and published by Silver Lining Interactive. It was released on 12 February 2019 for Windows, macOS and Linux. The game puts you in the middle of mass protests and lets you take command of either the police or the protesters, with neither side presented as simply right or wrong.
The campaigns are based on real-world events: the Indignados movement in Spain, the Arab Spring in Egypt, the Keratea protests in Greece and the NoTAV movement in Italy. Beyond these, more than 30 scenarios recreate tense situations in cities such as Paris, Buenos Aires, Caracas and Hamburg during the G20 summit, each with its own objectives and challenges.
In every scenario you direct groups of people, hold positions, push forward or retreat, and try to keep morale and public opinion on your side. Choices such as using force or staying calm affect how the situation develops, and your performance is rated at the end. A Workshop editor lets you build your own scenarios and share them with the community.
The project grew out of personal experience, as its creator witnessed the NoTAV protests first-hand, and that perspective gives the game a thoughtful, documentary feel. Striking pixel art turns huge crowds into living, chaotic scenes full of smoke and movement. RIOT: Civil Unrest is rated USK 16 and suits players who want a strategy game that explores social conflict from both sides of the barricade.
