About The Occupation

The Occupation is a first-person investigative thriller from White Paper Games, published by Balor Games and released in 2019. It is set in North West England on Saturday 24th October, 1987, and casts you as a journalist trying to uncover the truth behind a shocking event. You gather evidence by sneaking through restricted areas and by questioning people about their actions in a series of tense one-on-one interviews.

Time is the central pressure. Every minute in the game is a real-world minute, and the story plays out over a fixed length, so each decision about where to go and what to read really matters. Your wristwatch lets you set alarms and timers to keep track of objectives such as time-delayed safes, which means you can slip away while security searches for you somewhere you should never have been. Missing a clue is part of the experience, and the outcome reflects what you managed to find.

The world is detailed and systems-driven, with non-linear spaces and objectives that can be solved in multiple ways. You might climb through an office window, find an ID card or cut the power to a room, and the building is designed to accommodate each approach. Two security guards, Daniel Hillben and Steven Crow, patrol the Bowman Carson Group offices; the veteran Hillben is best avoided, while Crow is an aspiring actor paying the bills. People react to what you do, and trespassing, breaking into secure locations and cracking four-digit codes are all on the table.

The Occupation runs on Windows and is available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Korean, Polish and Russian, with full English voice acting. The narrative tackles social issues of trust and power, yet you decide which threads to follow and how deeply to dig. The late-eighties setting, with its chunky computers, paper files and smoky meeting rooms, is recreated in rich detail. It is a strong choice for players who enjoy slow-burn mysteries where observation, timing and careful planning count for more than reflexes.
